Every athlete on Elite Academy takes the same physical assessment battery every 12 weeks. Ten tests across four categories — movement competency, joint range, lower-limb power, and strength endurance — built by our physical-performance partner Athletix to identify the biggest injury risks and the biggest performance ceilings for a fast bowler or batter. Read this guide once, then film in about 45 minutes at home. A head-of-strength reviews every submission personally.

Why this battery

What ten tests actually tell us.

Nothing here is arbitrary. Each of the four categories captures a distinct dimension of the athlete — leave a hole in any one and the others eventually collapse under load. Together they tell a coach where you are, where you're most at risk, and what to work on this block.

Competency

Can you move the way a heavy-load session will demand of you? Squat and hinge patterns — the two shapes that decide whether the strength work later will build you or hurt you.

Range

Ankle mobility. Restricted here quietly reroutes force upstream to the knee, hip and back — where fast bowlers get hurt.

Power

Horizontal power, bilateral and single-leg. Correlates directly with sprint speed, delivery-stride force, and batting foot movement. Also surfaces left-right asymmetry — the single strongest injury predictor we have.

Capacity

Strength endurance — trunk, upper body, single-leg. Whether the tenth over of your spell looks like the first. And whether the non-dominant side of your body is keeping up with the dominant one.

Full protocol reference

Read once end-to-end before your first assessment. After that, jump straight to whichever test you're about to film.

Before you film

Set up once. Film everything in one session.

A well-prepared 45-minute window at home gives us cleaner data than half-attempts spread across two weeks. Get the space, kit, and warm-up right, then work through the battery.

What you need

  • Phone with rear camera and a way to stand it up (tripod, pile of books, shoe box against a wall)
  • Enough clear floor for a broad jump — ~3 metres out, ~2 metres wide
  • A tape measure that runs to at least 3 metres (a builder's tape works)
  • A wall you can put your foot against for the Knee-to-Wall test
  • A standard chair with a seat height around 43–46 cm (a kitchen dining chair)
  • A pull-up bar (doorway bar is fine)
  • A metronome — free apps work; set to 60 bpm
  • Comfortable training gear you can move in — barefoot for Knee-to-Wall, shoes on for everything else

Warm up first

10-minute low-intensity warm-up before you film anything. Bike, jog, or the FBU dynamic warm-up if you have it.

Order it right

Do the tests in the order below — power and jumps first while you're fresh, capacity tests last when fatigue no longer matters:

  1. Warm-up
  2. Squat + RDL competency
  3. Knee-to-Wall (both sides)
  4. Broad Jump (3 attempts)
  5. 3-Hop test (3 per side)
  6. Push-ups with metronome
  7. Pull-ups
  8. Single-Leg Sit-to-Stand (both sides)
  9. Front Plank
  10. Side Plank (both sides)
Fatigue matters. If you do the plank tests first, your power scores tank. If you do pull-ups after push-ups, you'll under-perform. Stick to the order — the sequence is part of the protocol.
Category 1 of 4 · Competency

Movement quality.

The two shapes every lower-body strength session moves through. Coaches score competent or not-yet-competent — no numbers. Fail these and we prioritise coaching the shape before adding load anywhere else.

Squat

Body-weight, no load. Filmed side-on and front-on. Coach-scored: competent / not yet.

What we measure

Whether you can move through the foundational lower-body strength pattern with the shape, depth and control needed to safely accept load later. This is a pattern-quality check, not a strength check.

Why it matters

Every squat, deadlift, split-squat, jump and delivery stride borrows this shape. A poor squat pattern under load isn't a strength problem, it's an injury pipeline — usually knees, sometimes lower back. We fix the shape first and add load second.

Equipment

  • Phone on a tripod (or standing against a wall on books)
  • Enough floor to stand with feet shoulder-width and a metre either side
  • Shoes on (or barefoot — just be consistent every 12 weeks)

Setup

  • Film side-on: camera at hip height, 3 metres away, whole body from head to feet in frame
  • Then re-film front-on: camera facing your toes, whole body in frame
  • Feet shoulder-width apart, toes slightly turned out (5–15°)
  • Arms crossed over chest or held out in front for balance

Execution

  1. Perform 5 body-weight squats under control
  2. Tempo: 2 seconds down, 1-second pause at the bottom, 2 seconds up
  3. Depth: hip crease below the top of the kneecap where your mobility allows — don't force past your natural end-range
  4. Keep chest up, spine long, weight even across the whole foot
Common errors coaches flag:
  • Knees caving inward (valgus collapse)
  • Heels lifting off the floor
  • Chest collapsing forward
  • Not reaching parallel or below
  • Weight shifting sideways or forward onto toes

Scoring — coach marks competent or not yet competent after watching both angles. Multiple minor issues can still pass with a technique note; any single major issue (heavy valgus, chest collapse, heels lifting) drops it to not-yet-competent with priority drills prescribed.

Competency · 02 of 10

Romanian Deadlift (RDL)

Body-weight, no load. Filmed side-on. Coach-scored: competent / not yet.

What we measure

The hip-hinge pattern — bending forward from the hips (not the lower back) while keeping the spine long. It's the safe way to load the posterior chain.

Why it matters

Bowling and batting both demand a strong posterior chain. The RDL is how we develop it. Athletes who can't hinge without rounding their back are one heavy training session away from a lumbar injury — this is the test that flags them.

Equipment

  • Phone on a tripod
  • Optional: a light dowel or PVC pipe held vertically along the spine (head, upper back, tailbone all touching) — makes it obvious when the spine leaves neutral

Setup

  • Film side-on: camera at hip height, 3 metres away, whole body in frame
  • Feet hip-width apart, slight knee bend maintained throughout
  • Arms hang naturally — hands slide down the front of the thighs

Execution

  1. Perform 5 body-weight RDLs under control
  2. Tempo: 3 seconds down, 1-second pause at the bottom, 2 seconds up
  3. Hinge from the hips — push your bum backward as your torso tips forward
  4. Slide hands down the thighs to just below the knee or to where you feel a hamstring stretch — whichever comes first
  5. Return by driving hips forward, not by lifting the chest
Common errors coaches flag:
  • Bending the knees too much — it becomes a squat, not a hinge
  • Rounding the lower back at the bottom (loss of neutral spine)
  • Going deeper than hamstring flexibility allows — force ends up in the lumbar spine
  • Heels lifting
  • Chin poking forward or neck extending

Scoring — coach marks competent or not yet competent. Not-yet passes lead to a hinge-progression protocol (kettlebell RDL → single-leg RDL → loaded RDL) before you're cleared for anything heavier than body-weight.

Category 2 of 4 · Range

Joint mobility.

One test. Ankle dorsiflexion — the joint most likely to force compensation upstream if it's restricted. Measure both sides; asymmetry matters as much as the absolute number.

Knee-to-Wall (Ankle Dorsiflexion)

What we measure

How much your ankle can bend forward (dorsiflex) with your heel staying on the ground — measured as the distance from your big toe to the wall when your knee just touches the wall.

Why it matters

Restricted ankle dorsiflexion is one of the quietest injury predictors we track. Bowlers with limited ankle range shift force upstream to the knee, hip and lower back with every delivery. Batters with restricted ankles struggle to get into low positions square of the wicket. It also directly restricts squat depth — so all the strength work on top ends up limited by an inch of ankle.

Equipment

  • Tape measure long enough for 15 cm
  • A wall
  • Barefoot — shoes off, socks off ideally

Setup

  • Lay the tape measure on the floor, perpendicular to the wall, with the 0 mark against the wall
  • Stand your foot on the tape, pointing straight at the wall, big toe on the tape

Execution

  1. Bend your knee forward toward the wall, keeping the heel flat on the ground
  2. Find the maximum toe-to-wall distance where your knee still touches the wall AND your heel stays flat
  3. Measure that distance in centimetres — big toe to wall
  4. Do 3 attempts per side, record the best
Common errors that invalidate the score:
  • Heel lifting off the floor at maximum stretch — score is invalid, back off until heel stays flat
  • Knee tracking wide of the foot (should track straight over the big toe / second toe)
  • Foot rotating out to cheat range
  • Not going bare-foot (shoes distort the measurement)

Explosive lower body.

Two jump tests — bilateral for absolute power, single-leg for asymmetry. Do these fresh, before any capacity work. Wear shoes.

Standing Broad Jump

What we measure

Maximum horizontal power your legs can generate from a standing start. Distance covered in a two-footed jump from stationary.

Why it matters

Correlates strongly with sprint acceleration, bowling delivery-stride force, and batting foot movement. It's the most robust and repeatable field measure of lower-body power we have — no equipment beyond a tape measure, no interpretation required.

Equipment

  • Tape measure (at least 3 metres)
  • Non-slip floor surface — no polished wood or lino
  • 3+ metres of clear space in front of you, 2 metres either side
  • Shoes on

Setup

  • Lay the tape measure straight out along the floor, 0 mark at your starting position
  • Stand with toes on the starting line, feet shoulder-width apart
  • Camera side-on if filming — shows the jump line and landing

Execution

  1. Swing your arms back and drop into a quarter-squat to load
  2. Explode forward, using arm swing for momentum
  3. Land on both feet and stick the landing — no shuffle, no step, no fall forward
  4. Measure from the starting toe line to the back of the landing heel in cm
  5. Do 3 attempts, record the best. Rest 60 seconds between attempts.
Attempts that don't count:
  • Shuffling, hopping or stepping on landing — must stick
  • Falling backward and sitting down (foot position at first contact is what we measure, but a fail-back suggests you jumped further than you can land)
  • Stepping over or leaning across the start line before jumping
  • Landing on one foot before the other

Power · 05 of 10

3 Single-Leg Hops for Distance

What we measure

Total distance covered in three consecutive hops on the same leg, sticking the third landing. Done per side. The critical output is the left/right asymmetry, not the absolute number.

Why it matters

Cricket is an asymmetric sport. A right-arm bowler lands hard on a braced left leg every ball; a right-handed batter drives off the front foot into the ball. Asymmetries in single-leg power are the strongest injury predictor we have — a > 10% side-to-side deficit dramatically raises stress-fracture risk on the weaker side and caps pace/power on the stronger side.

Equipment

  • Tape measure (at least 5 metres)
  • Non-slip surface, 5+ metres of clear space
  • Shoes on

Setup

  • Tape measure laid straight out on the floor, 0 at starting position
  • Stand on ONE leg, toe on the start line, other leg lifted behind
  • Camera side-on so coach can see all three landings and the final stick

Execution

  1. Hop three times in a row on the same leg
  2. Stick the third landing — no shuffle, no other-leg touch-down
  3. Measure from the starting toe line to the back of the third landing heel in cm
  4. Do 3 attempts per side, record the best per side
  5. Rest 60–90 seconds between attempts to fully recover
Attempts that don't count:
  • The other leg touching down between hops (must stay on one leg for all three)
  • Failing to stick the final landing (shuffle, step, other foot down)
  • Hip rotation on landing (indicates loss of control)

Scoring — absolute distance per side (cm), plus the coach calculates side-to-side asymmetry as (larger − smaller) ÷ larger × 100. Anything above 10% is flagged as a priority to address. Absolute rough bands for a senior male athlete:

Strength endurance.

Five tests. Trunk, upper body, single-leg. The measures that tell us whether your body holds up when the game gets long — deep into a bowling spell, batting a long innings, or the tenth over of a T20.

Front Plank

What we measure

How long you can hold a strict prone plank with correct body position. Anterior trunk endurance under body-weight.

Why it matters

Trunk endurance is the load-bearing structure that keeps a bowler's action repeatable and a batter stable through long innings. Weak anterior trunk endurance is directly linked to lumbar stress reactions in fast bowlers — one of the most common and season-ending injuries in the sport.

Equipment

  • Mat or towel
  • Stopwatch (phone works)
  • Phone on tripod side-on

Setup

  • Elbows directly under shoulders
  • Forearms flat on the ground, hands relaxed
  • Straight body line — head, shoulders, hips, ankles
  • Neutral spine — don't sag, don't pike
  • Feet together or hip-width — be consistent every 12 weeks

Execution

  1. Assume position, coach's stopwatch (or self-timer) starts
  2. Hold as long as position remains correct
  3. Test ends when: hip sags > 5 cm below the line, hip pikes upward, elbow shifts, or you voluntarily release
  4. Record time in seconds
Common errors that end the test:
  • Hip sagging toward the floor — loss of tension, quads take over
  • Hip piking up — you've offloaded the core
  • Head hanging or lifting excessively (throws off body line)
  • Elbow shifting or weight redistributing to one side

Side Plank

What we measure

Lateral trunk endurance per side. How long you can hold a strict side plank with proper hip elevation and body line.

Why it matters

Fast bowling loads one side of the trunk heavily — the contralateral side to the bowling arm. Left/right asymmetry in lateral core endurance is a strong stress-fracture predictor. This test surfaces it directly.

Equipment

  • Mat or towel
  • Stopwatch
  • Phone on tripod

Setup

  • Lie on your side, elbow directly under your shoulder
  • Top foot stacked on the bottom foot (or top foot placed slightly in front for stability if stacked is too hard)
  • Free hand on the top hip
  • Straight line from head to feet

Execution

  1. Lift the hips off the floor into a straight side-plank position
  2. Hold as long as position remains correct
  3. Test ends when hips drop toward the floor
  4. Rest 60 seconds, then repeat on the other side
  5. Record time in seconds per side
Common errors that end the test:
  • Hip dropping toward the floor
  • Rolling forward or backward (top hip should point straight up)
  • Head sagging or lifting excessively

Push-ups (60 bpm metronome)

What we measure

Upper-body pushing endurance at a controlled tempo. The metronome eliminates the "grind out fast partial reps" cheat and captures true strength endurance.

Why it matters

Correlates with shoulder-girdle stability, thoracic-spine control, and repeat-effort capacity — all of which decay across a long bowling spell or a batting innings. Also a fair proxy for pushing strength relative to body weight.

Equipment

  • Metronome (free phone app) set to 60 bpm
  • Mat
  • Phone on tripod side-on

Setup

  • Hands shoulder-width, directly under shoulders
  • Body in a straight line from head to heels — no sag, no pike
  • Feet together
  • Metronome playing at 60 bpm — one beat = one rep phase (down on one beat, up on the next)

Execution

  1. Start metronome, begin push-ups on the beat
  2. Full ROM every rep: chest to fist or floor at bottom, full elbow lockout at top
  3. One full rep every 2 beats — down on beat 1, up on beat 2
  4. Test ends when you miss two consecutive beats, or you can no longer hit full ROM
  5. Record total reps
Common form breaks that end the test:
  • Partial ROM — bouncing at the bottom, not locking out at the top
  • Hip sagging (loss of trunk tension)
  • Hip piking (avoiding pushing effort)
  • Resting in the top position between reps
  • Falling behind the metronome by more than one beat consistently

Single-Leg Sit-to-Stand

What we measure

Unilateral lower-limb strength endurance — how many times you can stand up entirely on one leg from a standard chair.

Why it matters

Second asymmetry test in the battery — this one focuses on strength rather than power. Together with the 3-Hop test, it gives us a two-dimensional read on which side of your body is under-developed. Predicts risk of contralateral-limb overload injuries in bowlers.

Equipment

  • Standard dining chair — seat height 43–46 cm
  • Phone on tripod front-on

Setup

  • Sit on chair, back straight, feet flat on floor
  • Extend one leg straight out in front — heel off the ground
  • Hands crossed over your chest or on your shoulders (no arm assist)

Execution

  1. Stand up entirely on the working leg, without the other foot touching down
  2. Sit back down under control on the working leg — no dropping
  3. Repeat until failure: other leg touches, hand touches for balance, or you can't stand up
  4. Rest 60 seconds, repeat on the other side
  5. Record total reps per side
Actions that end the test:
  • Other foot touching down (even briefly)
  • Using hands (touching chair, thigh, or reaching out)
  • Dropping into the seat rather than lowering under control
  • Excessive trunk lean (some forward lean is normal, but if you're using it as momentum, that's a fail)

Pull-ups

What we measure

Relative upper-body pulling strength — how many strict unbroken pull-ups you can perform. Body-weight is the load, so heavier athletes have more work to do.

Why it matters

For bowlers, upper-back and thoracic-spine strength is what holds the delivery shape together through a spell. For batters, grip strength and back development underpin bat speed and control. A strong pulling-strength baseline predicts durability of both.

Equipment

  • Pull-up bar (doorway bar, park bar, garage bar — all fine)
  • Phone on tripod side-on

Setup

  • Overhand grip, hands shoulder-width apart
  • Start from a dead hang — full arm extension, no legs supporting
  • Legs can be crossed at the ankles behind you, or straight down

Execution

  1. Pull yourself up until chin clears the bar
  2. Lower under control back to full arm extension
  3. Continuous — no rest at the bottom, no leg kick
  4. Test ends at first failed rep, first broken form (kip, kick, partial ROM), or when you drop off the bar
  5. Record max unbroken reps
Actions that end the test:
  • Kipping (using hip drive / leg swing to get up)
  • Chin not clearing the bar
  • Not returning to full arm extension between reps
  • Coming down off the bar and starting again — that's broken, prior reps count
  • Leg kick used for momentum

After you submit

The turnaround.

Once you submit your assessment via the portal, a head-of-strength reviews every video and score personally. Within 5 business days you receive a written report covering competency verdicts, absolute scores against age-and-gender norms, asymmetry flags, priority focus areas, and a training block tailored to those priorities that lands in your training diary automatically.
